Ecumenism, climate change and sustainability

Since 1995 I have been involved in international ecumenism on the issue of climate change. In addition to many smaller (work) conferences, mainly in Geneva and Brussels, the most important ecumenical and secular conferences in which I have participated are listed below. Not mentioned are numerous webinars, among others organized by various (UN) organizations and/or NGOs. Furthermore, I regularly give introductions, lectures and workshops on climate change and the role of religious organizations, both in NL and abroad.

1995

First European environment- and climate conference of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) in Mühlheim, Germany. Delegate on behalf of the ADS.

Although ECEN is ecumenical, the European Roman Catholic Bishops’ Conference (CCEE) has been organizing its own environmental conferences for a number of years. I have attended a number of these as a representative of ECEN and/or CEC.

2000

Invitation from the World Council of Churches (WCC) to participate in its international climate working group which follows the United Nations climate negotiations (UNFCCC-COPs) and the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD). Both trajectories emerged from the first UN conference on the environment and economy, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. The World Council of Churches has had programs in this area since the 1970s. During and alongside these UN conferences, the World Council organizes ecumenical celebrations and side events, and offers a statement during the final plenary session.
